Esslingen enters the historical record
Fulrad, abbot of Saint-Denis, bequeaths his estates in Esslingen to the monastery – the oldest written mention of the future town.
Town walls and castle grow together
After receiving town rights, Esslingen grows into an imperial city. Around 1286/87, the so-called Schenkelmauern link the hill above the town with the city fortifications.

The climb up the many steps is hard work – but the view over the old town and the Neckar valley makes up for everything! Do stop for a moment and take it all in.
An impressive fortification! The covered Seilergang walkway really took me back to the Middle Ages. The Dicker Turm is an absolute must on every visit to Esslingen.
Wonderful views over the vineyards and the half-timbered houses. Bring sturdy shoes – the paths are steep. There is a car park at the top, which is very handy with kids.
A very impressive site, free and accessible around the clock. Most beautiful at sunset, when the red rooftops of the old town glow in the evening light.
